Vapour/vapor diffusion pumps come in a wide range of pumping speeds from 60 litres/second up to 12500 litres/second, so they can be used in a number of different applications. All of these systems are usually dirty applications, vacuum furnaces, mass spectrometers, optical coating etc. All of these applications depend on the same thing to ensure fast, clean pumping, and clean and correct silicon oil levels.
Over a period of about a year, the operation of the system and the gases being pumped slowly contaminates the oil causing the pumping speed to decrease and generate more back steaming of the silicon oil reducing the oil level. Carbon deposits build up and the vapour pressure of the oil declines. Vapour Diffusion pumps must be inspected and cleaned at least once every 12 months to ensure fast pumping speeds and a longer pump life, resulting in greater production over the life of the pump.
