SF6 Gas Recovery Equipment
History
Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6) discovered in 1900 by Henri Moissan
In 1937 it was discovered that SF6 possessed a much higher dielectric strength than air
Major supplier Allied Signal (Silver Bottle) began processing SF6 gas in 1948
Electrical Applications
Circuit Breakers 345-500 kV
Puffer Breakers – SF6 used in place of air, oil or vacuum
Switches 7.5-35 kV
Gas Insulated Transmission Lines
Mini Substations; space requirements are as little as 10-20% of air-insulated substations
Non-electrical Applications
Magnesium Casting
Aluminum Degassing
Leak Detection
Particle Accelerators (Universities)
Window Pane Insulation
Nike-Air Shoes
SF6 Characteristics
Sulfur Hexafluoride has a unique combination of physical and electrical properties:
Chemical Inertness
Thermal Stability
Non-toxicity
Excellent Heat Transfer
Non-flammability
High dielectric/breakdown strength
Non-corrosive
Ability to regenerate
SF6 a Greenhouse Gas
Sulfur Hexafluoride is a fully fluorinated compound (FFC), and since FFC's have lifetimes of up to 50,000 years in the atmosphere, these powerful greenhouse gases can add a lot to global warming if emissions are allowed to continue to grow.
For example, SF6 has almost 25,000 times more global warming potential than CO2!!
