Decomposition Products of SF₆

• At very high temperatures, or in the presence of an electric arc, SF₆ can be slowly decomposed

• Decomposition byproducts include lower fluorides of sulfur, which are hydrolyzable, yielding SO₂ and HF.

• Moisture will react with SF₆ decomposition products in the presence of an electrical discharge to form a variety of compounds.
